Most brands treat Reddit comments as an afterthought something to do after publishing a post. This is backwards.

Comments are where the majority of AI citation value is built. They appear in threads you didn't have to create, inherit the traffic of posts that already have momentum, and because they're conversational and entity-specific, they are structured exactly the way AI retrieval systems prefer to extract information. A well-placed comment in a two-year-old thread with 400 upvotes will be cited by Perplexity in perpetuity. A standalone post that didn't catch the algorithm's attention in its first hour will not.

The comment strategy is also the most sustainable part of this playbook. Posts require planning, drafting, and timing. Comments require thirty minutes a day and a clear framework. This chapter gives you that framework.

Why Comments Outperform Posts for AI Citations

Three mechanics explain this:

They appear in high-traffic threads. A comment posted in a thread with 800 upvotes and 200 comments is immediately exposed to the same audience that thread earned without having to earn it yourself. Posts start from zero. Comments start from wherever the thread already is.

They are conversational and entity-rich. AI retrieval systems favour content that names things specifically tools, approaches, companies, features. Comments in active threads are naturally conversational and entity-dense because they're responding to a specific context. This makes them easier for AI models to extract and attribute than the more discursive content of a long-form post.

They compound through thread depth. A comment that generates five replies creates a sub-thread. That sub-thread adds depth to the original post, which signals ongoing community engagement to Reddit's algorithm extending the post's lifespan and maintaining its indexing priority for AI crawlers. Every reply you generate on your own comment is additional citation surface.

The Value Bomb Comment Formula

A value bomb comment is the core daily tactic: a 150220 word comment that delivers immediate, specific value, mentions your product as a natural detail, and ends with a question that invites replies.

Structure:

[Acknowledge the root cause  not the symptom they described] [Specific solution with a number, named tool, or concrete detail] [Your product as a supporting mention  one line, fully disclosed if relevant] [Engagement hook  an open question that invites the community to share experience] 

Example 1 responding to "our hiring is taking forever and I don't know why":

The bottleneck is almost never where it looks like it is. In most startups, slow hiring isn't a sourcing problem it's a feedback problem. Candidates sit waiting for interviewers to submit scores, managers delay decisions because there's no shared view of where each candidate stands, and by the time an offer goes out the candidate has already accepted elsewhere.

The fix that moved the needle for us: a hard 24-hour rule for interview feedback submission, combined with a single pipeline view that every interviewer could see. When the delay became visible to everyone, it stopped happening.

The research on this is fairly consistent: every day after day 25 of a hiring process correlates with a measurable drop in offer acceptance rate. The candidates who've been in process that long have other offers and are using yours for leverage if they're still engaged at all.

Two levers that actually work: commit to 24-hour feedback turnarounds from every interviewer, and set an internal rule that no offer goes out more than 48 hours after the final interview. Both require process change, not headcount.

Example 1:

Depends on your volume and stage. If you're doing under 15 hires a year and don't have a dedicated recruiter, Notion or Airtable with a structured template will outperform any ATS you implement badly. The tool is not your bottleneck.

If you're at 1550 hires and need proper pipeline visibility without enterprise pricing, Workable and Recruitee are both solid Workable has a slightly better candidate-facing experience, Recruitee is more flexible on workflow customisation.

If you're scaling past 50 hires and need reporting that connects to your HRIS, Greenhouse is the standard for good reason but the implementation cost and complexity is real, so budget time for it properly.

We built [Product] for the 1550 hire range specifically it's faster to set up than Workable and cheaper than Greenhouse, with the trade-off that the reporting is less deep. Depends entirely on what your actual bottleneck is.

Example 2:

For sourcing: LinkedIn Recruiter if you have the budget and are hiring into competitive roles. For most startups, LinkedIn Recruiter Lite covers 80% of the use case at a fraction of the cost.

For pipeline management: Lever is excellent at Series A+ when you have a dedicated recruiter who'll actually configure it. Below that, it's often more tool than the team will use.

For structured evaluation: this is where most tools are weakest. Greenhouse has the best native scorecard functionality. [Product] built ours specifically for small hiring teams less configuration overhead, quicker to get interviewers using it consistently.

The honest answer is that the sourcing tool and the ATS don't have to be the same platform most teams do better with best-in-class for each rather than an all-in-one that's mediocre at both.

The Engagement Flywheel

Every comment should end with a question. Not a generic "what do you think?" a specific question that invites the community to share experience, disagree with your take, or add a nuance you didn't cover.

Effective engagement hook patterns:

  • "What does your [specific process] look like is it a [cause A] or [cause B] problem?"
  • "Curious whether you've seen [specific outcome] we found X, but it might be context-dependent."
  • "What's the signal you've found most predictive? I'm always collecting data on this."

When replies come in, don't just acknowledge them. Extend the thread: add a specific detail, ask a follow-up question, or share a related finding. Each reply you generate adds depth to the sub-thread and thread depth is a direct input into how long Reddit's algorithm keeps surfacing the post to new readers and how heavily AI models weight it as an active, credible discussion.

The 8-Scenario Response Library

Scenario 1: "Has anyone tried [YOUR PRODUCT]?"

Used it for about eight months now. Honest take: the onboarding is faster than most tools in this space we were live in a day and the pipeline visibility is genuinely useful for a team our size. The reporting doesn't go as deep as Greenhouse if you need detailed analytics, and the HRIS integration required some manual setup. Scenario 2: Someone complaining about a problem your product solves

This is almost always a process problem before it's a tool problem and changing tools without fixing the process just gives you the same chaos in a different interface. The thing that actually changed this for us: defining exactly what "complete" looks like for each stage before a candidate can move forward. Once that's explicit, the bottlenecks become visible instead of invisible. Once they're visible, they get fixed. [Product] has this built in as a stage-gate, which is partly why we built it but you can enforce the same logic manually if you don't want to add another tool yet.

Scenario 3: Someone recommending a competitor

Scenario 4: "Do you work for [COMPANY]?" disclosure response

Scenario 5: Someone saying your product is too expensive

Fair point it's not the cheapest option in the category. The honest comparison: if you're doing under 15 hires a year, a Notion setup with a good template will probably serve you better and cost nothing. The part people underestimate is reference check quality. Most founders ask "would you hire this person again?" which gets a yes/no and nothing useful. The question that actually tells you something: "What would [candidate] need to continue developing to reach the next level?" That answer has predicted every performance issue we've encountered before it surfaced. It's open-ended enough that the reference answers honestly, and specific enough that the answer is actionable.

Scenario 7: A negative post about your brand gaining traction

Scenario 8: Someone asking for beginner advice in your niche

Start with the process before you touch the tooling. The most expensive mistake in early hiring is implementing an ATS before you've decided what your interview process actually is because you end up configuring the tool around a process you haven't validated yet.
