Subreddit Rules
- Be kind: A post or comment may come along that angers or frustrates you. Remember, there is a real-life person sitting behind that username. A little kindness goes a long way for yourself, and others.
- Please only participate while sober: We recognize that many people spend months "lurking" this subreddit while drinking. You are welcome to read as much as you'd like while not sober. However, for the sake of everyone here, and for the sake of your own recovery, please only post or comment when you're sober. "Sober" means "not currently intoxicated or under the influence in any way."
- Speak from the "I": We ask that you refrain from speaking in the imperative. That means don't tell others what they should or must do. Phrase your advice in terms of your own story, talking about what worked for you.
- Comment that will be removed: "You should do X"
- Comment that will not be removed: "When I was in your situation, I did X, and here is how it worked out for me..."
- "Strongly recommending" and saying "I would do this if I were you" are therefore not appropriate either.
- No promotion: This subreddit is a support group. We don't allow promotion of any kind. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Apps- if you built an app you may not advertise or mention it here. If your username links back to your app, you may not post or comment here. Doing this will get you banned.
- Links and mentions of outside websites, social media accounts, and recovery centers.
- Personal blogs.
- Excerpts from recovery method specific literature when not appropriate to the thread.
- Don't solicit/offer PMs or outside communication: It is inappropriate to request or offer to communicate with someone via PM, Skype, text message, telephone, email, etc. We strive to create a helpful and safe environment. /r/stopdrinking is most helpful when all community members have a chance to weigh in. /r/stopdrinking is safest when all communications are done out in the open.
- Be careful with medical advice: We are not doctors. Please don't ask for or dispense medical advice. Talking to a physician is the best (and safest) way to get medical advice.
- This includes asking about or offering advice on supplements and off label use of drugs not yet approved for alcohol cessation such as GLP-1 drugs.
- No surveys or research requests: This is a support group. People do not like to be poked at and prodded while they're in their support group. Surveys and requests for participation in research will be removed.
- Discussing recovery programs: We don't allow bashing of any program of recovery in this sub. To keep the community focused on peer support, we will remove posts that spark discussion or debate around a specific program of recovery. We ask that any targeted discussion of recovery programs be posted instead to the relevant subreddits: r/AlcoholicsAnonymous, r/SMARTRecovery, r/recoverydharma etc.
- Focus on your own journey: This is a space for us to share and seek support on our own journey with alcohol, and is not a place to talk about someone else’s drinking. As such, posts relating to another person’s drinking will be removed. If you need support with a loved one’s drinking, please check out our compiled list of resources in the side bar.
- Do not use AI to write posts or comments.: Opening up about your struggles with alcohol should be written completely by you, with your words. Sharing your success stories should be written completely by you, with your words. Everyone that participates in this sub deserves to have a human on the other end of a post or comment who can relate to the rawness, the messiness and the triumphs. Language translation will be the only exception. All others suspected to be written by AI, will be removed.
- Account linked to potential ban evasion : If you’ve recently been banned from r/stopdrinking and you create another account to get around the ban, Reddit does flag the new account. Please message the mods via modmail if you’d like to discuss participating in the sub.
- No bait and switch, fake relapse or misleading dream posts.: Posts that intentionally or negligently mislead readers into believing a relapse occurred, only to later reveal it was a dream, joke, writing exercise, or fictional twist are not allowed.
- The title is where people decide whether they are emotionally safe to read the post. We do not take that choice away from them.
- Misleading or bait-and-switch posts will be removed. Repeated or intentional misuse may result in a ban.
- Do not recommend other substances to the members of the community : There are many other substances that are legal in some areas and not in others. We do not allow the recommendations of any other substances. While we do allow posts about marijuana, suggesting others try it will get the post removed.
- No blog style/creative writing type posts: Posts in r/stopdrinking should be rooted in sobriety, not storytelling. This isn’t a place to pull out your creative writing skills and post long narratives that lean more towards entertainment.
- People come here to give and receive support and as a part of their sobriety maintenance. They do not come here to read lengthy posts written for effect or upvotes.
- Tell your story, plainly, in your own voice in a way that connects back to your struggles and successes.
- No AMA Posts: This isn’t the place for Ask Me Anything posts.
