Subreddit Rules
- Bigotry: Evolution is not justification for bigotry. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, or other forms of prejudice are not tolerated, and will result in a ban and the removal of the post.
- Keep Discussions Civil: We do not tolerate personal attacks, name-calling, harassment, or bullying. We expect all disagreements and discussions to remain civil. If you feel a post or comment breaks this rule, report it. If we have to warn you more than once, the probability of a temp ban approaches 1.
- Be intellectually honest in the asking and answering of questions.: We welcome curiosity and firmly believe that there is no such thing as a "dumb question" when asked in good faith. When answering a question, please assume that this was the intent, and answer with honesty and integrity. When asking a question, please return the courtesy to any answers you receive. If you have reason to believe a post or comment is not intellectually honest, please report it to the mods first. Low effort posts and comments written by LLMs (eg ChatGPT) will be removed.
- Off-topic: All posts and comments must be relevant to science of evolutionary biology, to the exclusion of any other topic, and must generate or contribute to discussion. All other posts will be removed.
- Spam, adverts, etc.: Surveys, advertisements, promotions (including self-promotion), for-profit content, and other like-motivated posts and comments require approval from the moderation team before posting. Please see also
- 2 of [Reddit's content policy](https://www.redditinc.com/policies/content-policy) as well as [Reddit's spam policy](https://www.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043504051).
- Science Denial and Pseudoscience: The moderator team takes a firm stance against the ideological rejection of mainstream scientific consensus and the dishonest propagation of pseudoscience. Posts or comments that push science denial will be removed. Repeated or particularly severe offences will result in a ban. Claims which don't deny science but cannot be supported by the scientific method will be scrutinized on a case-by-case basis.
- Creationism: Users of all faiths and none are warmly welcomed, but this is not an appropriate sub to discuss creationism, theology, or anti-evolution arguments. Our subreddit is intended only for the science-based discussion of evolutionary biology. All discussion of theology or creationism (for or against) should be redirected to r/debateevolution. The ideological rejection of evolutionary biology is not welcome here.
- Evolutionary Psychology: The mod team takes the stance that evolutionary psychology is rooted in poor methodology, conjecture and untestable hypotheses at odds with the rest of the Behavioral Sciences. It is often used for the validation of personal beliefs & behaviours, or even the justification of dehumanising rhetoric. Posts and comments rooted in or invoking Evolutionary Psychology are not allowed. Posts about developmentally complex behavior should be redirected to r/askanthropology.
- Speculative Evolution: Questions about fictional or “What If…” scenarios will be removed and redirected to r/SpeculativeEvolution.
- No Low Effort Posts/Comments: Low effort posts or comments typically aren't helpful and don't contribute to meaningful conversation or engagement, or involve requests for effort from everyone else that the poster in question would not in turn be willing to provide.
- Examples...
- Asking for thoughts on lengthy, unsummarized videos * Answers like "Go read a book!" * The question can be answered with a simple Google search * Use of generative AI to answer questions/make posts * Copy-pasting the same comment to multiple people
- Images: Image posts are permitted under the following conditions.
- Images must have educational value, must be relevant to evolutionary biology, and context must be clear. If an image has been taken so far out of context that the meaning is incoherent, we may choose to remove the post.
- Please do not post AI-generated images, macros, memes, joke images, or comics.
- plagiarism: do not claim credit for work made by another artist. We *encourage* you to source where the image came from.
