Subreddit Rules
- No low effort, bottle porn, or meme posts.: Posts should encourage meaningful discussion of American whiskey. Standalone bottle/shelf photos, memes, or simple questions without a thorough comment from the poster that fosters meaningful discussion are not allowed and belong on /r/whiskyporn or in the weekly recommendations/discussion sticky thread. "Low effort" is at mod discretion.
- You must include "REVIEW" in the title if you intend to leave a review in the comments section.
- No sales, trades, valuations, dating, or pricing requests, or links to raffles.
- discussion of any third-party raffles, sales, or trades on /r/bourbon. You may not ask for information about your bottles, i.e. valuations or dating, or those you're considering purchasing, you may not request information about third party transactions. You may not discuss where to sell or trade.
- Posts from mods for /r/Bourbon single barrel selections have approval from Reddit admins and are not bound by this rule.
- Failure to follow this rule may result in an immediate permanent ban.
- No store alerts, store questions, shelf pics, "would you pay" posts.: /r/Bourbon has hundreds of thousands of subscribers from across the United States and around the globe. These posts are not helpful to anyone.
- Don't post alerts to pricing at a store. Don't ask what stores to visit. Don't post pics of shelfs in stores. Don't post asking people if they'd pay X for something. Don't post pics of menus or bars. Don't ask what ranking you should use in a raffle.
- Find a local subreddit for that stuff or make one, and don't advertise it here.
- No links to online blog or video reviews.: /r/Bourbon is not a link aggregator, it's a discussion forum. We want to foster discussion of American whisky on the subreddit. People engage with reddit posts more than links to other websites. Posts directly linking to blogs or videos will be removed. However, if you’re a blogger you are welcome to post the full text of your reviews here with a link to your blog at the end of your review. Non-review blog links/articles are welcome as long as you're not spamming your own content.
- No undisclosed product placement including free product provided to review.: If a distiller, bottler, producer, or retailer gives you something at no cost, you MUST disclose it in your post, even if they don't explicitly ask for a review.
- If you are part of a whiskey club and review your own pick, you must disclose it.
- Producers and liquor stores are not allowed to review their own products or inventory.
- No allocation mania.: Not limited to Van Winkle -- no allocated whisky mania posts are allowed. Found a bottle? /r/whiskyporn. Want to know how to get a bottle? Create local relationships. Want to whine about how much a store is charging, or how hard some bottle is to find? Rethink your life.
- Don't yuck people's yums.: It's fine to share negative experiences with a whisky that someone reviews, but if your comment amounts to "only noobs could like this", then please leave that shit at the door. Many people have big budgets. Many people have deep cellars with interesting things that haven't been available for a decade, but someone can still enjoy a budget bottle or a local micro and share their experiences and shouldn't be shit on. We all start somewhere.
- No low-effort bottle suggestion/gift help/what to buy next posts.
- bottle suggestion/gift help/what to buy next standalone posts. Submit your recommendation requests to the weekly recommendation sticky thread; standalone "What whisky should I buy/gift" posts will be removed.
- No low-effort travel questions or photos.
- low-effort travel questions or photos. Reviews of distillery visits and guides are welcome, but not simple travel, dining or shopping questions.
- Standalone travel-question posts will be removed; you can search for distillery-visit reviews or ask simple questions in the weekly recommendations and discussion thread instead.
- Photos of gift shops, rick houses, and other distillery flotsam without an in-depth review of your experience belong on /r/whiskyporn, not here.
- No AI Reviews: Using AI to generate some or all of your review is not permitted at r/Bourbon. You don't have to be a literary genius and this community is about sharing YOUR perspective, no matter how well written, instead of the perspective of a language model, regarding what's in your glass.
- Mods can do whatever they want.: Mods have the discretion to take any action they'd like.
