Welcome to Biologically Normal Infant Sleep! This is a safe place to discuss biologically normal infant (and toddler/preschooler) sleep for those wanting an alternative to sleep training. Biologically normal infant sleep refers to the natural sleep patterns and behaviors that align with human evolutionary biology and infant developmental needs. Unlike adult sleep, infant sleep is highly fragmented, with frequent night wakings for feeding, comfort, and safety. STing support is not welcome.

- No advocacy or promotion of CIO.: Please do not advocate or promote cry it out or similar methods of sleep training (Ferber, “gentle” Ferber, etc.). Posts or comments doing so will result in a warning or ban.
- The definition of sleep training is very broad. We've tried to [bring some clarity here] (https://www.reddit.com/r/bninfantsleep/s/Agm3Jf8C61).
- Please keep all sleep advice responsive. : Make sure all sleep advice encourages responsiveness to the child’s emotional and physical needs at all hours of the day.
- No hate speech allowed.: This is safe place for all parents and caregivers seeking biologically normal infant sleep information regardless of their race, religion, sexuality, or gender identity. Any posts or comment that insights hate based upon race, religion, sexuality, or gender identity will result in a permanent ban.
- This is a safe place for cosleeping/bedsharing parents. : Please keep this in mind when responding. The Safe Sleep 7 and other bedsharing guidelines are encouraged. Outright unsafe advice (ex, using a lounger to sleep in) will result in a warning or ban.
- Please do not advocate for early night weaning or room separation.: Neither are a golden ticket for better sleep and should not be advertised as such. We encourage waiting until ~18 months to night wean (unless baby naturally does so) and 12+ months for room separation. Neither, night weaning or room seperation is a necessity and purely the parent’s choice.
- Be kind. : Be gentle and kind with parents who are struggling. If a post or comment goes against our rules, please message a moderator.
- We are not anti-formula or anti-crib. : While breastfeeding and bedsharing at the closest to biologically normal, not all parents can breastfed or safely bedshare. Formula and/or crib use or combo feeding parents are a welcome here if they have a desire to be responsive parents. We recommend all parents room share until 12 months minimum for both SIDs reduction and to aid in supporting an infants need to sleep close to their caregiver(s).
- 8. Finally, do not encourage the “self soothing” myth.: Infants are coregulators. They require an adult to help them regulate their emotions. Infants cannot bring themselves from a state of distress to calm on their own.Emotional regulation development does not occur until 3 years. Some infants do self settle to sleep. Article I recommend reading here: https://islagrace.ca/sleep-myths/truth-behind-self-soothing/
- Golden rule: This is a safe place for non sleep training parents. : Please do not come here to advocate or support sleep training. There are other subs for that. If you sleep trained, and have no issue with it, this sub is likely not for you. It may incite feelings of shame, guilt or anger.
- If you sleep trained and regretted it and are now open to responsive biologically normal sleep, this space is VERY much for you. If someone tells you otherwise, message a mod.
