Subreddit Rules
- Must follow site-wide rules: All rules of the site on which the r/auckland community is hosted (reddit.com) apply to the r/auckland community.
- Civility is required / No hate speech: Civility is required in all items (posts and comments). This means that you mustn't submit items that are personal attacks or denigrate people by their race, sex, age, abilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, employment status, social benefit status, or financial means.
- This also includes only engaging in good faith (for example, not posting things to get a rise), and not mentioning race in any item that negatively reflects on a person.
- Don't promote violence, property damage or violation of privacy: Promoting, endorsing, or glorifying violence, property damage, or violation of people's privacy, or people who commit or advocate such acts, is not allowed in any items.
- Must be relevant to Auckland: Posts should be relevant to the Auckland community. Comments should be relevant to the comment or post they are replying to.
- Avoid self-interested material: Items should not be submitted if the motive is, or appears to be, self-interested, unless you have permission from the moderators. For example, you should not submit items promoting your business, including affiliate codes, asking people to complete a survey as part of your education / work, asking people to crowd fund you, or promoting your website / blog / YouTube channel. More leniency on this rule is shown to one off posts by long standing members of the community.
- Avoid material that could be a scam: Items should not be submitted if it is not possible for everyone to easily determine that they are not a scam. For example, you shouldn't submit items asking for crowd funding for someone purportedly in need without asking the moderators first, as the community cannot verify that the funds will go to someone genuinely in need.
- No identifying or defamatory material: Items should not include identifying or defamatory information about people. Facebook links explicitly fall in this category. Note: Pictures of vehicle licence plates are not automatically considered identifying information, as it is no longer possible to readily look up owners from licence plates. Naming high profile people in an item is allowed as long as the material is clearly and verifiably not defamatory.
- Must not breach laws / court orders: Items should not breach laws or court orders in force anywhere in New Zealand, Australia, the United States, or the location of the person submitting the item. For example, items should not contain the names of people subject to name suppression.
- Source claims that could cause harm if incorrect: If you claim a fact in a post or comment, and the fact relates to something where relying on inaccurate information could cause someone harm (for example: health, safety, or the law), the claim must be supported by a credible source (provided in the post or comment). Credible sources could include media with a track record of accurate fact checking / peer review, or information from governments or recognised experts.
- No grossly insensitive or distressing material: Anything about a matter that is likely to be distressing for people (for example, a civil disaster, death, injury, accident or war) must not be written in a manner that a reasonable person would consider to be grossly insensitive or distressing to someone affected by that matter.
- News posts should not be modified: Links to news articles should not be editorialised, this includes taking a screenshot of the news article then writing your opinion on top of it. Opinions should be made in a comment instead.
