Subreddit Rules
- Read the FAQ!: Before posting, please look into our [**FAQ and resources**](https://www.reddit.com/r/French/comments/1629pyf/faq_read_this_first/). This is to limit the amount of reposts, and questions/requests already accounted for in these pages may be removed. See [here](https://www.reddit.com/mod/French/wiki/recurringposts) for more about our policy on recurring posts.
- Be respectful: We aim for a friendly, encouraging atmosphere. Rudeness and unkindness are unwelcome. Do not make disparaging remarks about race, religion, gender, nationality, etc.
- No blanket statements and cultural assumptions
- statements such as “The French are…”, “Americans are…” and other blanket statements about any nationality or group are allowed. Talking about your own experiences and feelings about the language is fine, but spreading or promoting assumptions about cultures is not welcome.
- No glottophobia: Glottophobia (discrimination against languages, dialects or other language varieties) is not allowed. We welcome language diversity, not discussions on what makes a dialect better or worse than another. “Mistakes” should be explained with open-mindedness; prefer saying “this would be considered wrong in x context” rather than “this is wrong”, for example.
- Post requirements Pt.1 (translation and transcription requests, homework help): Posts must require live human help. Translation and transcription requests are not allowed, **unless** self-research proves insufficient and **if** you have made an attempt but find yourself stuck or in doubt. You must include said attempt in your post.
- Requests for homework help are allowed as long as compliant with this rule. People will not do your homework for you.
- For translation requests unrelated to French-learning, try r/translator.
- Post requirements Pt.2 (relevance, prior research, legality): All posts on r/French must be related to French learning.
- Additionally, the purpose of this subreddit is to help French learners get their questions about French answered, not to serve as a search engine. Questions that could be answered by using the internal search feature may be removed.
- Finally, content shared in the sub must be acquired legally.
- Strictly no advertising: Advertising or self-promotion of any type is prohibited, as well as invitations to advertise. This includes (but isn't limited to) asking for recommendations for specific paid tutors. This applies even if the ad is NOT for-profit and just for visibility.
- Branded accounts (with a promotional username / profile picture / links) will be banned without notice regardless of the product or service.
- No requests for interactions: This sub is about helping people as a community. Every question and every answer can help other people.
- As such, the sub isn't a place to find language exchange partners, or set up one-on-one sessions. You can, however, look into [our Discord server](https://discord.gg/ABypkTkXmE), and specifically the #correspondances channel for language penpals.
- No NSFW Posts: Due to the large number of underage users who frequent r/French, we request that posts remain SFW. Specifically, avoid posting content of an overly sexual nature (mild NSFW posts may be approved). Use our “CW” flair when asking about potentially offensive content.
- Our Discord server has a channel for asking questions that might not be allowed here.
- No AI content or memes: AI is problematic in many ways, and is not usually a reliable learning tool. We may remove posts that promote or use it in a misleading way.
- For memes, consider r/FrenchMemes.
- Mod discretion: Mods are the final arbiters of justice. The rules are guides, but the mods can overrule them if they see fit.
