- - If you cannot release your formula because it’s proprietary, then your post falls under rule 5 and should not be posted in r/DIYBeauty. - If you’d like help with your formula, you must provide an attempt for critique. - Formulas must include at least 3 ingredients (exceptions can be made for 2 ingredients if properly formulated).
- Keep it scientific (pro-chemical and pro-science): We support scientific findings and legitimate research on cosmetics and cosmetic ingredients. Everything is made of chemicals, and remember that all cosmetic ingredients have been tested for safety.
- - No promoting or asking about “natural”, "clean", "organic", "non-toxic", etc. - No scare-mongering about PEGs, parabens, etc. - No undiluted essential oils, for safety reasons. - No TCA or salicylic acid products on large areas of the body, for safety reasons. - No sunscreen, for safety reasons.
- No preservative avoidance: Asking for help or giving help to avoid preservatives is not allowed.
- - It’s possible to DIY self-preserving cosmetics but due to these discussions promoting the wrong belief that preservatives should be avoided, these are no longer allowed. - You can ask which preservative system is appropriate for your specific provided formula and others may tell you it doesn’t require one if it’s the case.
- No for-profit activity or self-promotion: We understand that many hobbyists end up starting their own business, and that’s great! However, this is not the place to get advice that you will potentially make money from or promote your business.
- - Asking for help for your business in any form is not allowed, including formulation, packaging, market research, or anything else. - Do not try to hire anyone from this subreddit. - Any link or mention of your blog, social media, or store may result in an immediate permanent ban.
- No altering, mixing, or decanting commercial products: Only discuss commercial products in the context of duping.
- No food or supplements: For safety reasons, discussion about using food, drugs or supplements for DIY cosmetics are not allowed (**including for immediate use**): lemon juice, pills, nutritional supplements, tea, vinegar, yogurt, etc.

- advice or topics that have been proven to be damaging to peoples hair or skin. Eg: using traditional saponified oils in bar or liquid form in lieu of a proper surfactant based shampoo formula, essential oils known for phototoxicity or phytophotodermatitis in leave on products,
- Be civil, be courteous.: Swearing at others, attempting to pick fights, and being generally unkind are aspects that are not a part of this community and will not be tolerated.
- AI posts.: AI is spreading misinformation at a rapid rate, especially in the realm of DIY. Never use it to base a formula off of. Don't make posts to this subreddit that utilize AI to help write them or the formula you are posting about. Do you're own research and take time to learn about ingredients. Don't depend on automation that learns from ancient blogs/writings that often cater to groups that don't use sound science. It's not worth it, just don't do it.
