Subreddit Rules
- Be Nice.: Please be nice. Assume people are coming from a place of ignorance so try to educate instead of insult. **There is a zero-tolerance policy for shaming/berating OP** for any reason.
- In addition to this, know that we get posts from all over the world. Sometimes it's people who live in a village, 500km from any formal vet care. Often it's a minor who cannot make a unilateral decision for the cat in question. Be compassionate! Bullying them won't help the cat.
- No complaining about people who can’t afford a vet: We get it. None of us like seeing people who can’t afford to care of their pets. Bullying people won’t change that.
- As a subset of rule one; Complaining about poor people or their inability to afford vet care is not allowed.
- Exceptions are suggestions to rehome animals or other REASONABLE suggestions, so long as they still follow rule one.
- No soapboxing or off topic debate: Content needs to be on topic for threads and the subreddit. This isn’t a debate club. People come here from all over the world, with different cultures around how cats are cared for. People come here about strays. **No preaching! Take your cat care bible elsewhere!** Either give OP helpful advice about their issue or move along.
- No fundraisers: Unfortunately fundraisers can be fraudulent, so it is easier to have a blanket rule against them. This includes paypal requests, GoFundMes, and other fundraisers. The sub would also be inundated if this were allowed. Please seek financial support subreddits for your needs.
- Utilize NSFW Tag: Posts containing images and video of gore (including injury or medical sites), sexual behavior, or other potentially disturbing imagery needs to be flagged as NSFW.
- Not applicable to CATHELP: Posts need to be on topic for the sub and in relation to advice, questions, and discussion related to cat care. Cute photos/videos, and generic posts like asking what to name your pet will be subject to removal.
- Breed questions are no longer allowed: Unless your cat came from a breeder or has a family member that came from a breeder, odds are your cat is a domestic shorthair/medium hair/long hair. Unlike dogs, cats do not have as well defined breeds outside of registered breeders.
- A guide to fur patterns: https://sheltermedicine.vetmed.ufl.edu/files/2011/11/identification-and-coat-colors-patterns.pdf
- General answer to what breed is my cat: https://www.reddit.com/r/CATHELP/comments/hc0jny/an_answer_to_the_faq_what_breed_is_my_cat/
- No fake posts/karma farming: Posts must be made in good faith for discussion in the subreddit. Low effort posts are subject to removal (this does not include updates to a post about a cat). If the post is entirely made up or stolen, it will result in an immediate ban.
- No brigading.
- matter how you feel about an OP's post, mobbing their posts/comments on other subreddits to insult/mass downvote them is a bannable offense.
- No pet trade/intentional cat breeding: Overpopulation and unethical breeding practices, specifically inbreeding for desirable physical traits, is rampant for the species. This subreddit does not support these practices. If you want a pet, there are millions around the world in shelters, needing rehoming, and on the streets. A selfish desire for a specific cat's physical appearance should not be worth dooming another pet to life in a shelter or euthanasia.
