- r/Autoimmune purpose: The purpose of this sub is to ask general questions regarding autoimmune conditions and seek out advice from others in the community who may be able to relate to your experience. Keep in mind that nobody here is a medical professional and posting here is NOT a replacement for visiting a doctor. While commenting here, you should not be providing actual medical advice.
- Note: This is NOT a "diagnose me" type sub. Please refrain from "what is this" type questions. Do not ask for medical advice.
- Be kind and respectful: This is safe and inclusive space for all. Negative/harassing behavior and trolling will not be tolerated. Do not condescend users for their questions. If your comment is not helpful and/or hurtful to the poster, it will be removed. We want to keep this sub drama-free as well.
- Please also do not provide unsolicited opinions on someone's diagnosis.
- Also, this sub is not a place to trash-talk health care workers. We all know that the diagnostic process is difficult.
- Do not solicit or offer diagnoses: While you may ask questions about symptoms, results, and seek general advice, do not request to be diagnosed and, as a commenter, do not offer up diagnoses. Nobody here is qualified to do so.
- We understand that this is a tough line to walk in a sub like this. Feel free to ask for general advice, as opposed to "do I have ___?"
- On this note, as we often get questions about possible autoimmune rashes, keep in mind that skin issues cannot be diagnosed via a picture. Biopsy is often necessary.
- What does my positive ANA mean?: At least half of the questions we get are questions about what a specific ANA result means. While these questions are not off limits, please feel free to look through past answers to these types of questions in the sub (also see: why is my ANA positive but nothing else is?). Note that diagnoses cannot be made based off of ANA results (even if we could diagnose), so posting your own results may not be entirely necessary if you can find an answer already posted.
- Claiming to be a medical professional: We do not verify medical credentials, so claiming to be a doctor or any medical professional (i.e. claiming to have expert knowledge on a topic) is not allowed. Your own personal experience with a condition does not equate to being a medical professional.
- No spam or promotional posts: Please do not plug your own products, services, etc. Posting of surveys and requests for interviews are not allowed as we cannot guarantee the safety of any personal information provided.
- Please do not spam post the same question over and over again.
- No anti-vax/anti-science rhetoric: Spreading misinformation or harmful advice is not allowed. Feel free to post helpful resources (if not for your own profit) and scientifically-backed information, but please refrain from pushing pseudoscience. Do not post articles with the intent of stirring controversy.
- Conversations that turn into a vaccination debate will be removed. You may discuss your personal experience, but do not push your beliefs or make generalized statements without a scientific basis.
- Do not share personal identifiable information:
- Tag potentially sensitive topics "NSFW" or use a trigger warning:
- FAQ flair: Commonly asked "basic" questions will be tagged with the FAQ flair. Please check this flair before asking a common, general question.
- Safety: Any comments/suggestions that could cause harm to someone are not allowed.
- Do not actively encourage anyone to go against their doctor's orders. Encouragement to seek a second opinion is welcome if relevant.
- Mods have final say: Comments and posts that break community rules or reddit content policies will be removed at the discretion of the mods. If your post or comment was removed, check the rules, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Frequent rule-breaking may result in a ban.
- Take any medical information provided with a grain of salt: Do not make drastic steps in your treatment plan (changing medications, etc) without first consulting a true medical professional, and keep in mind that advice provided here is likely only from limited research or personal experience. Do not advise people to ignore their doctor's advice, except for suggesting a second opinion if warranted.
- Please consult a medical professional with questions in regard to whether or not you should start or stop a medication, treatment, etc.
- Keep in mind that we all have different experiences: The diagnostic process for autoimmune conditions is very difficult. Keep in mind that everybody is different and the cause of your symptoms may be different from somebody else with the same symptoms. Two people may have similar results for very different reasons. Keep an open mind.
- On this note, when seeking advice and asking others to share their diagnoses, do not use this as a way to override the "asking for diagnoses" rule and assume you have the same dx as others with your labs/symptoms.
